Got a few questions on my new baja, and need some help....Where to start...
I get a little back fire when I shut the bike off after riding. It's not a big pop, but a slight one. What could that be?
How high of a rev is too high? My book says the rev limit on the Baja is 7900. However, I dont think i'm getting that. According to the tach maybe 7400-7500. I have bounced off of the limiter a few times, but it doesn't seem like it hurt anything. I really want that CDI box now, but my next concern is does it have a cut off? If not, where to shift and has anyone thought about a shift light on their bike to aid in prevention of over reving? I have to fully agree that a little more rpm and this bike will scream.
How about those shocks? What is the best setting? Heck I dont even know where they're set at now. But what to set them at? How about drag racing on packed dirt or trail riding. This month I believe there is going to be an atv rodeo, and i'd like to make the DS known down here. I haven't seen any down here and want it to recognized as the shiznit. (which in my opinion it undoubtedly is..) But some of the events is barrel racing, wheelie riding (lord knows I need help there), and of course the infamous drag race. If anything, I know I have a very good chance at the drag. Last year if I remember right a rappy won the drags. I believe all he had was a pipe. I want a trophy, so I need some of ya'lls help.
Thanx guys (and galls if any)

well i would get the cdi, woods works, but if you can spring the extra the vortex is worth a look. as far as over rev i don't think this is a issue on a stock machine. gearing is important, i like 15-42or43 need a new chain for 43 this will help a lot on wheelies. i set my shocks a little stiffer than the manual recommends, but that would be a good place to start. but for drag racing soft would be better. get ahold of hightower he seems to know the carb well, and biggerisbetter is good at the drag set-up. the gears will help on the wheelies but practice helps the most. you might want to order a rear grap bar the stocker bends easy. prm makes one that is strong and cheap, $28

Is there a preferred site that you like to use that gives good deals and has it all? What will the 15-42 set up do for me as far as low, mid and high end? Also, what is the difference between the woods CDI and the Vortex CDI? And, after installing the CDI, is there a rpm cut-off or a recommended rpm to stay under?
Thanx for the input man, really appreciate it. I cant wait to get enuff time off of work to meet up in the dunes. I get jealous just hearing about you guys meeting up. Man it sounds like you all have a blast.

the dunes are great i make more friends at the dunes than i did when i was in the service, it's great. the ds pulls hard but it take room to hit top speed the lower gearing allows you to get there faster the top speed will be a little slower but if you can't pull the tire combo you have it might be faster. it is hard to chase people down.

Sandman hit it all on the nose. And even said who could give you tips in diff areas. The two cdi's as I understand it. Don't have a cut off. Nothing for you to worrie about unless you use a twist throttle anyway or untill your mods get much farther along. After the gearing and cdi. Go with a K&N carb mount filter. Then maybe a pipe or modded end cap.

Hi, I had this same backfire problem, as well as some slight hesitation issues. I moved the needle up one clip and it solved both problems. That was about a year ago and it hasn't backfired once since.
Good luck.
Good luck.

How do i know what size needle i have, and do i need to do anything else to the bike when i go up a size? Im sorry folks, but im rather atv illiterate. Just a grown man with lots of toys
Would it just be better if i waited till i get the pipe and filter? I am wanting to get the Pro-Circuit set up with a KNN. Change the CDI box out, (although i cant seem to find the Vortex one or even know if it is better than RWR's) and put new sprokets on. I guess the 15-42 set up?
What will my gains be with this set up? Mainly trail/creekbed and occasional sand up in St Joe's state park
Thanks all

well the advantages to the cdi, try the word unbelieveable, not that the quad will be lots faster but it really makes for a better feel on the engine, nothing like being in the sweet spot of a race or hill climb and to hit that gremlin. the gearing is a thing you will have to make a choice of, we all play with it and it differs some. another option is a 14 front it works well, i finally rode a 14-40 and it was nice and you won't have to deal with the aluminum sprockets that don't last well in the sand. there is lots of thoughts on gearing you will have to decide what you want. one thing to think about is how much time you spend in 5 th gear, you will run into raptors and i know for a fact that 02 and newer that will get a ds 1-3, that is same size riders and most races are over in a short distance, i know racing isn't the true test of a machine but there is always someone that wants to see what the school bus will do oh and when you get a chance see if your baja will redline or rev to 8000 in fifth gear if not start dropping gears you will be faster. hope this helps, the cdi is the first thing to get, and if you are worried get the woods, and if you decide you want the vortex you would get a lot of guys on that would want your woods box i would tell you where to check them out online but they don't want me to tell anymore
