question for the carb experts, please help....

im really interested in re-drilling the vacume holes in the slide bigger, has anyone else tried this, hows the result? what size drill bit, i would imagine not to go much bigger?
and would changing the pilot jet affect top end at all, or just the bottom range?

Drilling the slide will do two things....
#1 F#ck of the slide
#2 Draw more air in at idle and the begging stages of the mid range.
We used to do that to the butterflies on our Dominators to flow more air at idle. Because our cams had so much lope to them, we would load up alot when we were at idle. The problem in the theory is that if the motor is not pulling enough air at idle it won't make the slightest difference. You can achieve the exact same thing by giving your air screw a couple more turns. The only thing that the wholes are doing is adding air, which will meter more fuel. Obviously this is not a linear equation, in that AIR = MORE FUEL, but it will meter more fuel based on the capacity of the pilot jet.
If I were you, I would probably make the switch to Mikuni parts as they are readily available, and no conversions will be involved when talking about jetting. Dyno Jet stuff is realatively expensive compared to over-the-counter Mikuni stuff.
Your TM 45 will be the logical choice for a after market carb, although there are others available, you will have a much better knowledge base when asking questions about the TM 45. I couldn't get mine going for anything. The carb had a life before it came to me, as a Alky carb. Elliot at RWR finally pegged the problem. I had a drilled out Needle jet and one I pressed the new one in, it was a done deal!

On the stock carburator, TALK TO BUTTFUNGUS!!! I rode his STOCK DS this past weekend, and without a doubt it is the fastest, most smooth running DS I have even riden or seen! BAR NONE!
If you go to a TM carb, I would suggest the 42mm over the 45mm, after riding Mr.Meaners DS this past weekend. It had more low/mid power, and just as much top end as my 45mm.
On may stock carb I did drill the 2 small vaccum holes(on the slide) a hiar bigger, and I didnt see any difference really, but it didnt hurt it either. If yor take your air cleaner off, and rev your DS , you will see the vaccum slide bounce around at the top(that is a problem).
Talk to buttfungus(Steve) and afterwards you will be better off. Also I hear tha Mr.Horsepower has also done Extensive trial and error on the stock carburator.
GOOD LUCK.
Bigger.

Me and Buttfungus have swapped quads before, his was very nice, hey butt you up? pm with your technicques on helping out my carb, i dont understand the method you have described of sanding a washer to get the needle to sit straight, how do you do that?
also when you going to kermit again we gotta meet up... ive been getting huge air with my new TCS setup.

Call Ron Woods and get the flatslide 42 and be done. If you tell him where you live he will give you an idea and range on jetting. Then go buy some plugs and start jetting. I think the plug is the best way to jet.
