I know we have only heard from MWQ that Jet had redesigned and strengthened the newer 250 Swing Arm Shock Mount, I just got my replacement today and it's the same swing arm as my broken one is with no new improvements!

I guess it's time to get a mod designed and documented as a retro-fit to strengthen the connection. I looked at my 200 and it appears to be the same one, as confirmed by the online catalog.

Has anyone talked to Eugene about what owners could do to keep this from breaking? I'm sure he, like us owners, would rather have the part modded before they break. Gotta be safer, cheaper, and less hassle/downtime.

Maybe Bill can go review his ideas from the prior post and offer some design ideas. Certainly, there are numerous ways to add some supporting metal to increase the strength and a weld-on would be the strongest. Some form of drill - bolt on could be designed to attach between the swing arms struts and the existing welded bracket.

Something as simple as a couple 1/4" steel strips bent to go flat against the inside of each swing arm strut. Holes on each end, one for the shock mount side and the other for a bolt that would go through the swing arm in a drilled hole. Seems like a ten minute job and not requiriing any special tools or welding. Less mess too as it would not mess up the paint like new welds.

My fix solution for the weak construction of the swing arm shock Mount (at the bottom of my Repair Page)! These pieces will be welded onto the existing brackets as well as the swing arm it's self!

I spoke with Eugene the other day and as of then only you and I had broke the mount. He had not heard of yours until I told him. I think it will be taken more seriously now that you broke yours.

Your modification to the mount is sort of like mine. I added strips of 1/8" stock to the sides of mine. It looked like you used 3/16 or 1/4".

I have wonder if you simply welded a thick washer to the outside of each mount before it broke. Would that be enough to strengthen the area?

Looks good - that'll do the job for sure. :-) Welding plates is easiest if you have the swing arm out of the frame. Do you know what MWQ or others did to resolve his break?

Welding additional plating adjacent to the existing weld point retains a single point to take all the stress from the shock. I wonder if you get practical improvement in strength by welding an added support plate to the side swing arm bars as this would distribute the load across a much broader area. Having no practical welding or metal design experience I have no idea how much, if any, real difference it makes.

Did you get any response from Raceway or Jetmoto about a "Jetmoto-approved"mod?

thx

I'm sure welding thick washers would make s big difference on an unbroken arm. I am now not going to replace the broken arm seeing how this arm is no different then my broken one. We will weld these pieces with the arms still on the quad. After all this time you would think someone in the know would have spoke up about the claims of a new redesigned swing arm was never made a reality. I had been touting it since you had made the claims so now it makes me look as a lier also. Little disappointed with the way this was handled!

but john said he hasn't used a welder in his shop for 2 years. outofline fix is exactly the samething i would have made, and that i describe in my eariler post, as far as welding a washer, i'm not a stress engineer but would think it would it not work as well as adding new guessets, the new gussets will carry the part of the load all the way to the swing arm along with the exsisting gusset really beefing up this area.

Hi Outofline, I posted a few pics to you recently showing a new swing arm that seems much stronger than the existing one on the 200-250. It is on the new 150 that I just got a month ago. My assumption is the new swing arm will start flowing throughout their new quads and parts inventory once they start replenishing that parts. It does not seem likely that they would throw away all the old design units and replace them wholesale with the new ones unless there was a very common fatal flaw that created serious safety issues. A recall does not seem necessary but I could be way off base.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>the new gussets will carry the part of the load all the way to the swing arm along with the exsisting gusset really beefing up this area.</end quote></div>When you weld the two pieces together the new part is welded along one side to the shock mount. Wouldn't it be stronger to leave a gap so that the new piece could be welded on both sides to the swing arm? Maybe it would be overkill and the basic improvement is more than adequate.
