Default problems shifting

Friend took my ATV out for a ride and was 'speed shifting' ie not using the clutch...

In any event now the bike runs fine and will shift up in gears no problem, but in order to get it to shift down you literally have to jump on the shifter. Now the shifter arms moves down just fine, it just sounds like whatever it's supposed to be catching it isn't.

I am very leary about opening this motor as I don't have any specs for it, like torque for bolts or any gaskets/seals that might be in place.

Anyone have any experience with these transmissions that might be able to give me a few helpful pointers? Thanks in advance!!

It's a vbike V4SW, has a 250cc vertical lifan/honda clone (I believe) I included a picture of it. If it would help I'll get the engine vin #'s.
I've began draining the fuilds today so as I go along I'll try and post pics so someone can tell me when I've done something terribly wrong lol!
