Sidewall Puncture - Patch?
#1
The quad I bought has fairly good tread on the rear tires. The problem is one has a puncture in the shape of a "V" on the sidewall. I was told it can be patched from the inside. The replacement for the single tire is $95 + mounting cost (Carlisle 4 ply Turf Buster). At this time I won't be going on any rough terrain. I had not anticipated buying new tires for a while. Even with the flat the quad can be ridden around the yard.
Has anyone patched a sidewall puncture this big? If so what did you pay? Was it worth it?

I have done it before. Your best bet is too get a local tire shop too put a vulcanizing patch on the inside......then add a tube and you are set. About $20 and I was good too go. How big is this V shaped cut? I have used up too 6-7 tire plugs in 1 hole before with no problem....of course the best way is too get a new tire....but unfortunately it's the most expensive. When plugging a hole feel around and put the plug in along the same path of the rip-gash...which will almost always be at a angle.

We had a tear in the side wall of my wife's Prairie a little smaller
than a soda bottle top, I just had a tube put in it and glued the
flap down with some shoe goo.. its held up fine.
Think it was a total of $10.00, 5 for the tube and 5 to mount and
balance

Well, the tire guy took one look and said he couldn't fix it. I was bummed and spent Saturday looking through my catalogs . Last night I decided to take a look at the tread on the other tire. It is a newer tire than the one with a hole! Go figure...... So, I decided I would buy one tire. It's a 4 ply tire and for me to replace it with 2 - two ply tires is going to cost a bunch more with less sidewall protection.

Go to another tire shop. I got a patch vulcanized onto a gash that big on a 2 ply tire and I used no tube after that, just put it back on the rim. It never lost a bit of air after that. I just replaced that tire and it looks good still, off the rim now. That tire man is not good enough at it. Probably used to looking at truck tires that use 80+ pounds of air.

Fix-A-Flat. Friend put it in the front tire of his 04' Raptor and it is still holding 3 monthes later.

Good advice, thanks!
I had already ordered a new tire online through of all places, WWW.WalMart.com! The tire is a Carlisle Turf Buster. Walmart priced at $46 plis $15 shipping. That's better than most of the online prices and the shop where I by my stuff at. I am at a point in my life where I don't have much time to work on things and it seemed easier to spend the money and get a new tire. It's great to hear that just a tube holds up for 3 years. In hindsight, that is probably what I should have done.
By the way the tire is a 2ply plus, not a 4 ply.
