Default Putting Wolv. back together, Questions

I bent the axle on my 99 Wolverine and removed it to have it straghtened and to replace the axle bearings (one was completely wasted). I know how everthing goes back together but I have a few questions. Most of them have to do the the Ring and Pinion Housing bolting to the drive shaft housing and the axle housing. When I unhooked the R&P housing from the driveshaft housing, about a cup or two of fluid came out from around the drive shaft. At first I thought this was oil but now I am not sure. Was this oil and if so, how much do I put back and how? Also, where these two pieces fit together (the R&P housing and the drivesaft housing) there wasn't any type of gasket or sealant, should I use some RTV or blue silicone type stuff when I put it back together?

Also does there need to be any type of oil or grease in the axle housing? There didn't seem to be any there when I took it apart.

Finally, is there any preventive maintance that I should be doing on these parts to prevent the rust and gunk build up in the axle housing and the driveshaft housing? I could have taken a spoon and scooped crap out of the bottom of these areas. This is the first time that I have had to do anything other than oil changes and grease fittings type of maintance on this bike so I am really happy overall.
