I have a '98 banshee and it is time to replace the chain and sprockets. I am getting a D.I.D. 520 ATV x-ring chain because it is supposed to last the longest. For the rear sprocket should I go with aluminum or steel? I know aluminum is lighter, but does it hold up as good? Will my chain outlast my rear sprocket?

Whatever you do,Do not buy an aluminum sprocket.I went and spent the $$$ on a renthal top of the line and it lasted about 4 months of hard riding. My friend did the same and got about the same life out of his.Your best bet is to buy a stock or tell them you want the cheapest one they make.I have raced mx and flat track and the cheap ones hold up the best!!

Hypothetically, if I buy aluminum (or steel) and it last for only 6 months would I then need to replace my chain also? The D.I.D. ATV x-ring chain is supposed to last for years, but would a 6 month old used one make a new sprocket wear out faster? What is the use of having such a good chain if you have to change it when the sprockets wear out if the sprockets don't last long?

why would you need to change the chain if the sprocket wore out?

I have always heard that you need to change the sprockets and chain at the same time. Because if you just get new sprockets then your chain that is not new will wear out the new sprockets quick and vice versa.
