Dune closest to Canada?
Dumont is closer, but only by a few hours. I live near San Bernardino, and Dumont is 2+ hrs to the north, and Glamis is 2+ hrs to the south. So, if you have driven a thousand+ miles already, what is another 4 hrs?????????? Definitely do them BOTH!! Dumont is closer to Las Vegas, and Glamis is nearly straight south, near the Salton Sea.
There are also lots of places to ride desert cross-country. I would particularly recommend Rasor which is near Dumont, and Ocotillo Wells which is near Glamis. Might as well experience it all while you are here. So bring your XC tires as well as your paddles.
I would recommend late fall, or early spring. What will you be camping in??? Temperatures are usually mild, but the wind can ruin your whole trip if you are not prepared for it. And, it is all dry camping.
