Sand Dunes for dummies

Old turtle, you reminded me of something. Flat tires out in the dunes suck. Most of the time you just stuck a tire in a dune and now it's going flat. What happens is that sand has gotten in the bead and it's not sealing. Take the tire off and wash out the bead with a hose and reinflate, this will usually do it. I take a small micro pump and a plug kit with me in my backpack on longer rides. You can get one of these pumps from any bicycle shop, they inflate small bike tires to over 90psi and work well for atvs. Most come with some sort of mount and probably could be fixed to your subframe. If the tire is off the bead and your a ways out your riding on 3 wheels! The good news is that it's sand and if your careful you probably wont kill the tire just don't try to go fast, the bad news is that it's going to weigh 50lbs with sand in it and your not going to be able to easily get it out without taking it off the wheel. If you have extra tires and you have room in your truck, bring them. Knobbies are better than nothing.

Make sure that your quads, bikes, or whatever you plan on riding/driving in the dunes is ready to go and not needing any work before you can use them. If your quad isn't running correctly or your sure it just needs a smaller/larger jet then fix it before you leave for the dunes! Nothing is worse than driving a couple hours or more just to find out that you can't fix it and now your short one bike, you smell like gas and you need a shower which your not going to get at most campgrounds Make sure that everything fits, works, and doesn't need any maintenance!! I know that Sandman430 rebuilt the top end of a blaster ( including over bore and piston ) out at the dunes but I'm sure he would have preferred not to

One more thing about sand toys, if your machine is leaking anything or puking oil out a seal or leaving anything out in the dunes fix it before you take it out. If the forestry service catches you leaking fluids in the dunes it is a hefty fine and you will have to remove your machine without running it, which means push it or tow it. Everyone wants the dunes to stay clean and beautiful, please do your part. I find small ecological disasters from sand campers that tried to repair a truck or buggy or whatever and just dumped fluids on the ground, makes me sick..

Sounds stupid...but always make sure you have he keys to your quads in the glove compartment of the vehicle you are driving before you leave. I've been on one trip where I forgot the key to my Z at home, and one time the key in the Warrior flew out as we were driving!
Let me tell ya there is nothing worse than driving many hours only to find out you don't have your keys...
