Choke Cherry vs. Olds
#52
Choke Cherry's claim to fame has always been how steep it is...not necessarily how tall. It is the steepest I have climbed, and I have been up most all of them in the Western US. It also has fine sand and is at the high elevation, making it one of the toughest climbs around.
The reason it can be steeper than the others is because it has Choke Cherry bushes helping to hold the sand from sliding down (most other faces do not).
I would say Comp Hill at Sand Mountain Utah is one of the "longest and steepest" combinations I have seen. There are some other climbs there that are very challenging as well.
There are also some very challenging climbs at Winchester Dunes up into the treeline.

Maybe because it is the first big hill you arrive to from Sand Hills resort, it threw me off?
Now I REALLY am curious about Thunder Mountain height..................

I'm pretty sure it is steeper than choke cherry, because I was able to go up Choke in 3rd gear the entire way, but had to immediately shift into 2nd after hitting devils dune!

The face of Choke, the part that everybody runs isn't as steep as it used to be. Lots of sand been thrown down it, when you're there you'll see the face of the hill on either side is steeper. There are plenty of chutes to run up along the wall that are as steep as the main part used to be. I'm talking about the part maybe 30 yards wide at the bottom, narrower at the top, that everyone races up. It's been chewed away a lot over the last decade and the wind doesn't every reshape it all the way to the bottom anymore.
Yes, 2fun, when you first hit thunder you have an impression since it's a pretty big hill. Devils however is probably 40% taller if not more. This we'll have definitive numbers on soon as the snow melts and I'm gathering scientific data Hey if I range-find the actual climb, and also have the actual vertical rise, I can determine the angle of the hill in degrees too.
Devil's dune is as steep as choke cherry hill. Once you round the bottom and get past the bottom 1/4 or so of the climb you hit pure "sand fall" as steep as the stuff will stay.
Either way, most of this is academic, the run from thunder to the back has many, many, many big huge steep dunes that induce vertigo to the average flatlander or heck almost anyone who hasn't experienced St Anthony. Look, now I'm all excited and all I can do here is plow snow.

Good description Shady.. SA's is something Glamis duners need to experience.. Wyoduners GPS said 9 miles of MONSTER dunes from the BLM campground to the edge of the dunes by Devils Dune.. Devils Playground is as good as it can ever get for huge dunes, hillshots, and bowls that would swallow commercial jets..I guess when your going downhill and tapped out in top gear you really can't ask for bigger dunes.. Oldsmobile Hill is big,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,, if you haven't been to either Sand Mtns or Idaho's dunes..

Thats the part that makes me extremely nervous!
Knowing I am flying down an off-camber slope tapped out in top gear knowing full well, that if anything were to go wrong, thats about a 70+ MPH mishap!!!
NOT GOOD!!!
