Default Front gear change? 450YFZ

I was just woundering what others have done with their gearing, changed front or rear or both. I'm a sand rat and love ridding at Sand Mt., Dumont dunes. I have an "05" YFZ w/ GYRT full pipe, Ron woods intake, Ex. cam mod. Bike runs great. I am stock gearing, was woundering if one up or down on the front gear, would do. Has anyone done this and what did you like or dis like about it. Thanks.

No personal experience with the YFZ, but on my 400EX I went one tooth lower in front and it was to much. Made it absolutely wheelie happy...couldn't keep the front end on the ground!

On my 450R which is all rev, I went down one tooth and it is a big improvement.

Just guessing, the YFZ if real revey as well and I would bet that one tooth in front wouldn't be a bad thing. Front sprockets are pretty cheap...buy some and give it a try! Usually one wants to gear down for dunes, and going smaller in front at least means you can probably keep your current chain length (???).

Thanks for the reply. I'v been told to step it up one tooth, since the bike has alot of power. I think going down one is the way to go. Yes I will be shifting a little quicker, but I just might be able to carry 4th gear all the way to the top of the hill without down shifting.

450's are all rev. They aren't exactly torquers...and that is what you need in the dunes. I think you will find that duners gear down. You want an increase in low end power, so you will never bog down and can always keep those paddles truning.

But again, front sprockets are cheap as dirt. Get one up and one down and try them out....pretty simple!

i dont like to go up tooths in the sand unless you have alot of engine mods. in the dirt i think to run a tooth up on my raptor 700 to reduce wheel spin.

I bumped the front tooth up wife's 350 Raptor to a 14T (of course no comparison to the YFZ) and it did great in the dirt, but in the sand it wanted to stall just putting around in 1st, even on the dunes stock setup much better....( 14T just geared too high), so I put the stock 13T back on, but upped the rear by 2, and it's ready now!
My 700R, haven't changed the gears YET for the sand, but IF I do, I'll go 2 up on the back.
Also rode a LTZ 400 in the sand many times, and yes all rev, but I wouldn't change the gearing on that. It's smooth!
