Can anybody list in order the best dune riding areas in the US, to include fpor example, Silver Lake, Glamis, Oregon, Little Sahara(UT)(OK), ect; I'm in IN, but if I'm going to haul my ATV across the country I at least want to know which dunes would be the best for all around riding, ect; from people that have been to several different ones... -Thanks!

In Calif, I would rate them Glamis, Pismo, Dumont. I havn't ridden anything out of state. Glamis has to be #1 nationwide, it's just plain massive!

Let's see Glamis is bigger. Why is it better?????? Sand Sport Magazine did a dune trip all ove the country three years ago. Saint Anthonys was rated biggest overall dunes (heighth) and Choke Cherry the steepest of hills. They rated Glamis good, but didn't list it a favorite for anything, but I guess you can't beat the atmosphere. LS Utah was rated the best bowls because they are TRUE bowls, not my words, and Sand Mtn at 700ft is much bigger then Oldsmobile Hill and the top hillshooters come here not Glamis. I have not been to Glamis so I'm sure I will catch some slack, but I have seen a ton of pics and peoples' experiences.. Copy and paste my URL to see Saint Anthony and LS Utah pics. Everybody prefers a type of riding so I guess it depends on you. Glamis is around 60-70,000 acres and LS Utah and Saint Anthonys are around 40-50,000 acres. There is Oregon dunes, Dumont, Sand Mtn Nevada, Pink Coral Ut, LS Ok, Silver Lake and a few other smaller areas out west. I am not bashing so please don't bash me.

I would have to say that glamis is the best "all around" experience and w/glamis you have a lot of room to roam

The hills are decent and on the holiday weekend there are a lot of vendors of spare parts, welding, food, accesories etc.

The rangers don't give you a hard time unless you do something out of the ordinary to attract their attention

You and your crew can hang out at boardmanville for a couple pichers of brew if you need a little nite life outside of camp

----DUMONT is also very cool because dunes are steeeeepp and tall but the area to roam is pretty small but you can cruise to nearby death valley and see some point's of interest.

Bigger is better because it offers VARIETY. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it somewhere out there!!!

Hmm sounds great ...however when I lok at the map I get thoroughly depressed... I need something when driving distance of Indianna. And because I'm only taking a week vacation, I need something within a days driving of Indianapolis. So as far as I know the only two dunes that leaves is Little Sahara in OK, and Silver Lake in Michingan. I came from riding in LS in Utah and loved it. I'm thinking of driving the extra distance to LS in OK over Silver Lake, because of what I have heard about the two. What do you guys think? If I missing any other dunes within a days drive(10-12 hours) besides these two please advise....

Your best bet would be LS-Oklahoma for the most fun for your dollar. It is 1500 acres versus 560 at Silver Lake. Silver Lake is directional and on weekends it is very difficult to even get in. Also there may be a sound level regulation in place very soon.. Silver Lake also requires a very specific flag that most folks do not have when they get there. Little Sahara flags need to be red ( or orange ) and at the top of a 10' whip.. Any additional flags need to be below the red flag. Then...with time restraints any sand is better than no sand. LS-Ok. is five and half hours from Kansas City. If you are coming to LS in October the weeknds are busy, but you will get to ride. Go to www.waynoka.com for more info. If you decide on LS let me know and I will do what I can with info to help. i.e. North campgrounds near the big dunes,, South campgrounds near the flat drag strip area..
