My brother and I are heading to Glamis later on this year for the first time at all riding in the sand and since all we do here in Missouri is harescramble racing in the woods we were wondering what would be the best all-around rear tire for us to use. Right now both of us have basically a bone stock 400ex except for exhaust and K&N Filter.
Thanks in advance,

You should get either the kenda geckos (which I have and really like) or the skat trak haulers. I know 3 guys that run geckos on bikes like mine (and yours) and they are happy. And I know 2 guys that use haulers. They are about dead even up the hills on a 400ex. The geckos pull away in long drags though, because they are a slightly taller tire.

The stock 400EX tires work really good in the sand also. Just air down to 2-3 pounds and you can go anywhere.

Stock tires on quads with decent power like yours and mine will work just fine in the sand. Stop only on down hill slopes and you won't have any problems. If you want to buy sand tires, I went from my holeshots to the haulers and there is a remarkable difference. If your going to play in the sand only once or twice a year you could save the money and use your trail tires. JMO

P.S. On second thought, you may as well buy some sand tires, once you play in the sand you will want to do it again and again.

WSHEDSKIN....
Yes! That quote is VERY true! I'm from New Jersey, but this summer I came to Arizona with my BANSHEE to ride at the sand dunes. Everybody on the internet said it was a blast and so fun...So i had to give it a try. Now I AM HOOKED on riding on the sand. I LOVE IT! I'm never going to go back to trail riding. I bought Sand Sharks for my Banshee and they work great. I love it so much that I go out and ride EVERY SINGLE night at Buttercup. I head back to NJ on Aug 3 because I have to start school in the end of Aug. But, Ill be back during the season sometime.

Hey, you are the guy me and my buddy hooked up with at Buttercup, aren't you? The big sandbox is something that kind of gets under your skin and you just have to keep going back to scratch the "itch to ride".
We are going to Hot Wells Dunes tomorrow, but I am really going to try to get my buddy to go to Buttercup instead. Anyone up for riding tomorrow night?

I bought a set of the Kenda Geckos to test out the Trinity Racing pipe On my Z400 at Pismo Beach and I was completely disappointed. My friend had Sand Skates with a stock motor and he could pull me because I was spinning so bad. When I got back I purchased a set of 10 paddle Haulers. With a 10 inch rim they will slide pretty easy and the 10 paddle will hook up good for jumping and up to 3rd gear climbs. For 5th gear drags they will slow you down but I mostly play and want quick acceleration. The 8 paddle is good for stockers and all around playing.

maybe it's not the tires at all,Maybe it's because your bike is weak. Just a thought?

I tried out a set of Gecko's. What air pressure are you running? I had 3.5 in mine and they did give up a little hook off the line, but then again, I never thought they would hook up like a straight paddle. They are, however, in my humble opinion, one of the best handling sand tires I have ever used. They do everything great, but just don't hook as hard off the line. The price on them is awesome as well. I feel that if I went down to 2.5 psi, they would hook better, but since I am not a drag racer or hill shooter exclusively, I did not bother.

Realtors hook up well enough in the sand. They're not as good as paddles, but the convenience of being dual use compensates. I have 22x12x10 Realtors running at 3psi with no riding problems.

BTW: gear down to 14tooth front sprocket and your 400ex will become a crazy beast. My friend has a 400ex and it was a new machine once he changed the sprocket.
