Im sure you would do fine, heck if a 300ex can make it im sure you can. I wouldnt go trying to climp sand mountain with it, but you'll do fine. Just learn how to ride the bike and you should be set. They make some cool aftermarket parts/cylinders and engine kits that will also give you much needed power as well

I had a 96 Explorer 400 2WD that I took to the dunes a few times. The motor had lot's of power, but weight was a BIG disadvantage.
It had lot's speed on the flats, but on the hills it did about as well as my 2000 Kodiak 4WD.

It depends on the dunes you plan on riding. Don't expect to climb the big hills but then again, if you go to LA dunes, Silver Lake or Listtle Sahara, OK then you won't have big hills. Go out West and you will want a faster & lighter machine pretty quickly.
So do they do well? No. Will they get you around on small dunes? Yes.

I have a 99 Scrambler 400 it will take the dunes pretty well. I can't get to the top of some of the biggest dunes. but most of the stock machines can't make it up there either. I have a lot of fun and get around very well. It jumps pretty good, but is a little heavy. Mines a 4x4 so that ads a little wieght.
