I don't care who you are, that sheet is funny!
Unfortunatly, it's a little bit true also.

I am quite suprised that a simple math problem can turn into a discussion on the on the true meaning of mathematics. If you really need that answer, maybe you need to consult a buddist priest to find the true meaning of mathematics and how exact or absolute it is. LOL.. no one believe him though because they would argue about his lack of experience with nitro methane engines.

It seems to me we could have exchanged some interesting facts here if we hadn't somehow got lost in a silly discussion about whether you should punch 0.33 or 0.3333 into your calculator for 1/3. This is basic stuff you learn in pre-pre-algebra.

I have been reading through this as well. Knuts looks like a mountain compared to the wind that is blowing on this thread

That is also my thoughts. However, my one consolation is that there are ten other readers of the thread that will actually learn something. So all is not lost.

Makes me think harder about it thats for sure. I built a new spreadsheet off of the schumacher run. where i have all the times trying to develop a more plausable acceleration curve. It don't mean nothin but its fun anyway..

It does take a power measurement to determine the load to apply, but that measurement is descibed as a secondary purpose and not expressed in any common way.
Horse power is simply the product of RPM times Torque divded by a constant. This is the universal way of calculating HP that every dyno on the market (except inertia dynos) use to calculate HP. The only other calculation for HP is something called corrected HP that takes into account barometric pressure and air temperature.

On the other hand, inertia dynos calculate HP based on the acceleration rate of a fixed inertia. Since the product of acceleration and inertia is torque, the HP can be calculated easily. However, it makes the assumption that the acceleration is calculated over some small time period, which can result in a measurement error.

In actuallity, it method of applying a load has since proven to be unreliable as it uses a disk brake that has shown to change drag co-efficient as it heats up.
All dynamometers use closed loop control on either speed or torque. So it does not matter that the drag on the disc brake is non-linear. The worst dyno for linearity is a water dyno. Since it has vanes that recirculate water similar to a torque converter, it has a transfer function where the torque on the dyno is proportional to the square of the speed and directly proportional to the amount of water in the dyno. This makes the controls of a water dyno very difficult. A non-linear compensator can be designed for the squared relationship to speed however, there is no direct measurement for the amount of water in the water dyno. One interesting way to estimate the amount of water in a water dyno is to measure the water dyno outlet pressure. The other thing that sometimes makes a water dyno difficult to control is the outlet control valve may have non-linear flow. Here is where outlet pressure applied to the control loop can help compensate.

This truely is the beauty of personal computers. It is so easy to do these type of "What if" type calculations. When I was in college, we used slide rules to make calculations. Things sure have changed.
