maintenance (oil filter)
#1
Any thoughts on how often to replace the paper oil filter in an 05 YFZ450 that's running synthetic 10w-40? I replace the oil every two days of riding (or ~10hrs). My guess would be about every 30 hrs (or on the 3rd oil change)?
I figure it should be about the same amount of ride time as any other quad.
Also any thoughts on using synthetic vs regular?

iv never changed oil in anything iv owned that much. anything iv owned it been a filter either everyoil change or everyother one. but the oild changes have been 2-3 a yr. seems to me a little over kill. imo

anyone who changes his oil every ride is a liar or has some fawked up priorities. someone who rides a stock recon who changes his oil with amsoil every time he putts around is wasting his money. a sport or mud rider with a built or high hp, high rpm engine and rides it hard may not be. should be case by case. i use royal purple and change it yearly or every 100 hrs like the book says. i took an oil sample an had it lab tested where we send engine oil from work and it came back trace for anything after a year and 115 hours run time with royal purple.

yea travis, i am new to quads and 4strokes. I have been riding mostly 2 stroke dirt bikes most my life, those I would recommend changing (gear/tranny oil) every two rides, or one if you raced that day. So was just wondering if there were some similarities but sounds like the consensus is for 4 stroke quads spread the changing time out a bit.
(fyi its also my opinion to at least check the oil every ride, to at least see if there are any metal fragments, discoloring, etc. (kind of preventative))

if i changed oil in my wheeler that much. at $7 a quart, and the way everything is going up, and people are getting layed off(like myself). and a filter at $8 it cost me about $25 per oil change. and if i changed it evry 10hrs ida spent about $100-$125 on oil changes or more if i rember how many hrs are on it now. think theres like 40 or 50hrs.
i can see a racer, or some one who makes money on atving. but not a joe blow puddle round the house/farm or something like that, unless your working it really really hard.
and with anything with a motor you have to check the oil!!! iv heard of people being asked if you checked the oil. and they say "oil?? what oil! i have to check it??" lmao makes me wonder.
as for oil changes. i got a 08 500 polaris atv. if i rember it was an oil change after 10hrs if its a brake in, and 100hrs or 6monthes or 620miles after that. i usaly did it in spring and fall. on my old wheeler, and never had an issue.

Well overall i believe change more often than not, and that more often with your basic 10-40 is better than a long time with royal purple, etc. Also my style of riding has been racing, dune climbing, and jumping. All of which Im hitting the rev limiter quite often. Sounds a bit different than how you riding the utility quad. Also my filters are like 2 bucks a piece and reg 10-40 is a couple bucks a quart. so its like 6 bucks for me to change my oil. (i would rather spend 6 bucks every couple of weeks rather than 1-2k on a new motor or rebuild every year)
