The 400ex is about as bullet proof as they get and the ltz is nearly as bullet proof. However you will have to ride a 400 a little differently than a 450 in the dunes. Speaking from experience (I currently ride a slightly modded 400ex), you may have to get a rolling start at dune rather than just powering up it from a standstill. You may have to pick different lines if you're riding with a group of 450's. It's about planning ahead. That being said, if it's power that beckons, you may eventually reach a point where a 400 is no longer enough. The most popular 450 in our riding group is the KFX450, with a couple LTR450r's, TRX450r's, and YFZ's. But all of them seem to do quite well in the dunes. It just depends on what fits you better, whether or not you like fuel injection, or whether you want reverse.
That is a good point a lot of bikes do not have reverse . I do have the 4 mods most wanted and again ride some steep Oregon dune sand down south and all, always good on my Kawasuki 400 . also has been about as maintenance free as I think you can get.

Hey Hebo!

I ride the Oregon Dunes as well. Is your screen name any relation to the town of Hebo, Oregon?

Sand Lake and Florence usually, Coos Bay once in a while. The 400ex does ok there. I rode Winchester Bay for the first time last year, and that gave the 400 a work out.

the Z400 is a good starting quad or start off with a 450 now paddles get ITP sand stars if on a budget if you have enough money you need to get skat trak haulers 8 paddles 20 or 21 inch on 8 inch wheels thats what we run on '04 Z400 on my quadzilla I run 9 paddle haulers would not advise you to get a zilla you need to stay with 4 stroke the zilla can be handful
