Default "A Few Questions In 1 Thread"...

Hey im looking to buy a ATV for the first time and I also NEVER rode a ATV so I wanted to ask a few questions...also i'm a fast learner and won't drive faster then what my skill level can handle...so I rather just get that 1 ATV and keep it for a while...rather then starting low CC's and wanting a bigger ATV in a few weeks or months...

1. What do you suggest me starting out with...a used ATV or a new ATV?...

2. I'm 5'10 250lbs and wanna be able to drive fast...won't be really into racing other ATV's or doing major jumps...but I want a nice fast ATV...what you guys suggest and why?...

3. Out of all the companies out there...Yamaha...Polaris...Kawasaki...Honda...KTM and etc...is there really a difference in the brand I choose?...I favor Yamaha because they look the most aggressive to me...and my favorite color is blue......

4. I see alot of people add on different pipes and for power and everything...but is there a way to tell exactly what pipe will do what and what sound it will have on your ATV?...or is it just a lucky guess when shopping online for a pipe?...

First question is where will you be riding and what are the conditions? Is it dunes, dirt roads, rocks, deep mud or water? A sport quad is best for dunes, roads, and decent trails. A 4x4 utility machine is great for slow going like ruts, rocks, and deep water and mud. A good crossover is the Can-Am Renegade. Sporty, quick quad (500 and 800) with available low range and a 4wd. All the listed makers produce great quads. Let us know what kind of terrain you'll be in most of the time and that will help narrow things down.

Ya really have to let us know what kind of riding you are looking to do. Mud/snow riding on a sport quad can be downright miserable. on the other hand, utility machines are not as much fun in the dunes or at speed. Pretty much all the major manufacturers have decent choices for both sport and ute machines. At the outset, sounds like you might be looking for something in a sport, The 700 raptor or one of the Polaris Outlaws bear looking into.

Well I would be doing most of my riding in dirt roads/dirt trails...not going to be into riding in deep water or mud...so mostly flat land and minor hills...I'm moving to Montana...so it's a mixture of open fields...wooded trails...mountains...but just looking at the trails and everything online...doesn't seem like a YFZ450 a really outshine a Raptor 700...because you really won't be doing straight aways to long...so...i'm thinking about going towards a Raptor...but you guys let me know...also...should I buy a new one or used one?...also I'm plan on doing wheelies as well...

If your moving to Montana check with Specta on this site. He seems to have been everywhere out there. (Lucky Guy). I would see what he has to say on this. No replacement for experience.

For what you describe a Raptor 700 would be a great rig. Has EFI with great power. Not a lot of ground clearance. But if your trails aren't nasty you don't need it. Easy quad to ride with good power is the Kawasaki KFX700. Has a rear differential with more clearance, not as much power, and has an automatic belt drive instead of manual. The Honda 700xx has a pretty potent engine with EFI and it has IRS (independent rear suspension) for ruts, rocks, and roots. The Polaris Outlaw 525 has a powerful KTM engine. It is a manual transmission quad and you can get either a chain drive solid axle or chain driven IRS. I think with your size and desire for speed these would all be great choices.

The Outlaws with the 500 are pretty bulletproof and have IRS. The 525 is more powerful and you can get it with a straight axle or IRS. The Predator was the "sport" quad Polaris made just before the Outlaw. Straight axle chain drive with good power. The 500 is a great engine. Not the fastest but super strong.

So a YFZ 450 a beat a Outlaw 500?...also...what about them KFX450's?...they look nice and are a little cheaper then the YFZ's/Raptors...the problem with me is i'm picky and when I want something...I wanna buy what I really WANT...ya know?...so my mind keeps goin back and forth...you say "The outlaw is super strong but not the fastest" kinda made me go back to the drawing board...lol...
