Question Inexpensive Storage Box Options - Tool Box??

Morning All,

So for the past few years I have been using a "waterproof" duffle bag for my rear rack storage. I stored tools in there, some food, air pump, etc. Well the zipper on it finally went south so the bag is junk. It initially cost me $19 bucks and it worked great - kept everything dry

So seeing that I have a hard time justifying $100-$150 even $200 for a storage bag or a storage box, I am seriously considering buying a plastic tool box ($20-$30) or even the MTM Case-Gard storage boxes ($20).

Stanley, Stack-on and Homak make some decent 20" tool boxes, and Stanely even makes a 28" Fat-max waterproof one.

Also one of the reasons I don't/won't buy a storage box is the Size - I have a rear - rack extension on my quad, to I would need a box that fit within that. Hence my reason for looking at tool boxes.

Anyone out there use toolboxes as storage?? - or any ideas of less expensive storage options (Under $50)

I don't know if this will fit between your rack extensions or not but I can fit it in the bed of my X2. Walmart.com: Contico Storage Locker: Storage & Organization I don't think I spent that much though. More like $35 in a Walmart. I just bungie cord it down and off we go. It's great in winter time to throw clothing in. I haven't had any dust or water get in yet. It's not called waterproof but it has kept things dry for me.

I do exactly what you want to do. I bought a 20" toolbox at Northern. Then I built a wood platform for it. This platform is made out of 1/4" plywood and it has small strategically placed pieces of wood glued to it on the bottom that keep it from moving side to side and front to back. Then on top of this plywood I also put some wood pieces so the toolbox fits snuggly on top. Then I bungee it down. Works great.

i bought a plastic 17" craftsman toolbox for like 10 bux at sears, drilled some holes in the bottom, mounted it to my rear grab bar, and i can stuff all the tools i'd need for an on trail repair, be it my quad or someone elses, even tools big enough to work on trucks.
