Is is likely that I could bend the axle by snuggly using them as the strap point? I'm talking firm but not going nuts on them.

I would just load it up, set the parking brake, hope for the best........and post a video or pictures of the result!!

This really can't be that complicated...come on!

I welded U-bolts to the front and back of my trailer and use ratchet tie-downs.

Your buddy was right as the correct way is to tie from "non suspended mass", rather use tire net like car transportation trucks do. That allows the vehicle body move up and down when trailer hits the bumps, compresses the vehicle suspension and bounces back up.

When tied from frame and trailer hits the bump, atv suspension compresses that causes the straps to come loose and once the trailer bounces back and atv bounces back up against the straps. ATV's are relatively light vehicles but I have seen heavier equipment to tear off the D-rings from trailer when tied wrong way (allowing the suspension movement and hit against the strap).

When I replace the rotting deck boards on my trailer I'll have to look at that system. How thick of deck boards do they suggest when using this system? I'm not crazy that with this system the ATV is only secured to wood, not metal. But the ease of use looks great.

Default Tie down

The deck boards can be anything as long as there is enough support under them. Expanded metal mesh needs extra support underneath to bolt to.
