oil filter purchase question
#2
I get a cross reference for other brands, then purchase one of those. For example, I can get a Purelator Pure One filter for my 2008 Grizzly 700 that is 1" longer (more oil filter surface area) than stock, and only costs 6.80 with tax, way cheaper than the Yamaha factory one, and just as good if not better. That way I can go down to any local NAPA or autoparts store and pick one up.

If you can get the Honda number off the filter, you can Google " oil filter cross reference" and get a whole list of websites that have replacement oil filters listed by brand and quality.
Yours is the open media cartridge, not the spin on type, correct? those are a little more specific than the car type spin on filters a lot of the newer quads run. In your case, I would look up your quad in Dennis Kirk (denniskirk.com) and get them there, fast shipping and you can choose from the lower price ones like Emgo, or go all the way up to K&N for about 10-12 bucks a piece. I even saw a stainless steel replacement filter for yours, it uses a fine steel mesh, and can be cleaned and reused. That type came factory on my Wolverine, and it has worked fine for many years.
As far as oil, if you are want only the best, look into synthetics like Amsoil ATV oil, Red Line, etc. Brands like Valvoline make a nice ATV oil, and you can get that at Walmart. Just make sure it is a JASO rated wet clutch compatable oil, I even used Valvoline 20-50 motorcycle oil one summer i went dune riding, for the extra heat protection the thicker oil would provide. All around, all season riding, you can get by with a 10-40, or even the new 0-40 synthetics that will protect in summer heat, and still flow great for starting in the winter. It all depends on your spending preferences, good oil costs more, but often is still cheaper than dealer oil, and I believe the Honda HP oil isnt even a synthetic.

20-50 is more for middle of summer, hard working conditions, where heat break down of oil is a concern. for your trail riding, 10-40 is fine, if it gets cold, look into the synthetics and the thinner weights, like the 5-30 or the 0-40.
