i like going in the mud...but i would not call myself a true mudder...but my 03 330 magnum, 01 500Ho and 2010 550xp have all performed flawlessly over the years and i still have them all. I agree many 4 wheel drives are not true 4x4's but i believe polaris's are true 4x4 deals.

Basically, I would recommend any machine 500 ccs and up other than the Hondas because of their lack of a full front locker. It sounds like your budget is going to be more of a deciding factor than anything else. I had very good experiences with a 06 Sportsman X2 500 and a 2005 Polaris ATP 500. A couple minor issues but they were good overall. Any of the 4x4s with the right set of tires will do pretty well in the mud. If you're talking Mud Nationals or something like that you've got to spend the money for oversized tires, lift kits, clutching, etc. to give you the kind of clearance for the deep, deep pits.

Brute Force all the way, go all out and get the 750, you get 2 cylinders and they haul some serious butt! A buddy of mine has one, and they really are a brute force machine, they look sick too. When I get a ute, that will be what goes in my garage.

Now a days most all 4x4s have true 4wd system expect Honda and a few budget 4x4 like in the 350cc class like my Grizzly or a Suzuki KQ/Eiger 400.
But in general 80% of all 4x4 have lockers from the factory now. ATVs like the Big Brear that did not have it at on time do now.
Thats why those companies that use to make locker add on kits are pretty well out of business, Honda is there only customer now.
Another thing you will want for a mud machine is IRS for more gound clearance (Another thing most Honda 4x4s do not have) and a low range in case you get in real thick heavy mud.

Buy a Arctic Cat 1000 or 700 Mud pro they come stock lifted and with 28" tires and snorkeled right from the show room floor.
I don know if I,m missing something but I do not see a winch!,Thats kind of important in a mud machine.
