Default LT80, cranks then trips circuit breaker

I picked up this lt80 out if a friends backyard and I've been working on getting it to start.
I replaced the battery, spark plug, and the missing starter solenoid. Now when I hit the start button the bike cranks once or twice and then trips the circuit breaker. I reset the circuit breaker and it does it again.the power wires were getting kinda hot which leads me to think maybe an open in the circuit increasing resistance? Or maybe they just get hot with a lot of juice flowing?...
Any ideas what the problem could be?
I did a voltage drop from the battery to starter. Got source voltage at the power side of the starter. When cranking it dropped to 3-5v indicating it was using the voltage..

Also, the starter does turn the motor. The belt spins and what not so I don't think the starter is bad
