Default ATV engine size limit.

Finally found the info on atv engine size limit laws. Until certain states change the under 1,000cc law, they will not be getting bigger.

This explains why Can Am turbo'd the Maverick, hope the Outty/Rene folow. A turbo'd Sportsman/ScrammyRZR would be nice too.

A long time ago part of Michigan's definition of an ATV was that it was 50-500cc. It looks like they raised it to 1,000. I can't see them raising it higher anytime soon.

I don't think I'd ever want a turbo on a atv, even if it's from the factory.

I think the Turbo'd maverick is reserved more for the dry climate like sand dunes where the turbo boost will help it in HP robbing sand up steep hills. i don't think I'd want to go submerging a turbo underwater though. Not to mention that there wouldn't be much room for the plumbing

ATV's/UTV's are not submarines, so if you go under water and grenade it, its on your own dime. Turbo's snowmobiles are more common place these days. I think something will happen, simply because of the power wars and the cc limit.

If they get any more expensive, then nobody will buy them anyway, no matter how much power they have. 1000cc 4x4 atvs costing $12000-$13000 is unreal. The size will become an issue too. If they get much bigger, they won't fit in a full-size pickup truck bed. At some point, manufacturers have to consider liability issues with making them any bigger or faster. 800+lb machines going 80+mph being sold to anyone with enough money to buy one will almost certainly result in more deaths than when the biggest machines were 500cc. Add more power and that number will go up. I think that is one reason why Yamaha and Honda refuse to get caught up in the hp wars, they don't want lawsuits to ruin their reputation. Not to mention machines that are less reliable and require more work to keep them running.

Really the displacement limit is not a factor on ATVs since their motor are so detuned anyways.
Polaris could put a Liberty 145hp 750cc 4 stroke twin from a sled in a atv if the displacement laws got in the way.

Yamaha has a 65hp 500cc 4stroke twin in there sleds as well.

Could you imagine what they could do to a 1000cc if they put their minds to it.

It just like Street Bikes have a 200mph speed limit law now because the "speed king crown" was getting out of hand for the government.
So now its a contest to see who can get to the 200mph law limit in the least amount of distance and time.

You won't see a sled engine go in an ATV, they could not build a cooling package big enough to keep it cool in the summer months. Mother nature does half the battle for them.

Is the liberty 750 a naturally aspirated engine? I can't see it producing 145 hp without a blower. The 1000cc four stroke sleds are only in the 100-120 range as far as I know.

The yamaha 500cc 4t twin (called the genesis 500) is a impressive motor but it actually is derived from the yz-250f Motorcross motor. I'm sure there's more to it than this but it's essentially two yz-f engines slapped together. It makes 80hp btw, not 65.

I'd like to see what yamaha could do with two 450r engines

The 750 is only 145hp with turbo option but is still a impressive 85hp by itself without tricks.

My 500 Rotax was fan/air cooled and could run on grass all summer without over heating at 50hp.

There is a guy on youtube with a XC700 motor (120hp) in his Scrambler using his existing water cooling system without mods.
Remember they put a man on the moon once. A 150hp 1000cc ATV is not a problem.
