Default New to site and needing help with atv

hi I have a 1998 Polaris xplorer that is smoking and not running very well. Needs choke to start and will not idle on its own. Any help would be appreciated thanks Andy.

Welcome to the forums.

Check out the Polaris section here. We have a retired Polaris tech in there that probably dreams about repairing these when he sleeps.

i don't know much about atvs since I'm a first time owner (yesterday) but from previous experiences the smoking could mean that it may need some rings and from the sounds of it it sounds like the carb but I'm not sure take it to a dealer to get evaluated would be my advice

A 1998 Xplorer is also possibly a two stroke. Because the gas and oil are mixed together and burn together a little smoke is fairly normal. I had a 2000 Xplorer 250 for a while and it smoked a bit.
