400ex starting problem
#1
yesterday i had a problem starting the quad. i originally thought it was a dead battery however after testing it i knew it wasnt it. it wouldnt even turn over all there was was one click every time i tried to start it so i took apart the battery and i found out if i fooled around with the circular box that has the ground and power wire for the starter it would fire right up. i looked around and there was little to no corrosion on the terminals so i really dont know what it is the only other thing i could imagine was since i was in really wet conditions last weekend that could have something to do with it... did anyone else have this problem? any suggestions? thanks

Yes, if your battery is good, check all the big cable terminals, on the battery, on the chassis, and on the box you referred to, lets call it a starter relay, even the one on the starter itself. If they are all clean and tight, it could be the starter relay itself. If it does it again, tap on it with a soft hammer or screwdriver, if it turns over, then replace that relay. It could have gotten moisture inside of it and corroded it.

The way I understood the problem was that the starter wouldn't turn, not that the machine wouldn't run. ElectricShift could be on the right track too. The fact that it began to work when you "fooled around" with the starter relay makes me think that's a possibility, even though usually if they click they're good. A poor connection on any one of the big cables is high on the list too.
