Manual Clutch for 250 EX???
#1
In the May '03 issue of dirt wheels (I think) i was reading the letters section and came across a letter where a person said that they had installed a manual clutch on thier 250 EX, which come's stock with an automatic clutch. They also said that this made it faster. Is this really possible and if so how couldi get i done to my 250 EX. Also, would it really make it faster??? Any info will help, thanks.

I read that article also and was wondering the same thing, I dont see how it could be done. you would have to do alot of work. I also dont know why that would make it faster, he didn't change anything on the motor.
IDK maybe he is a master mechanic!

Yeah, i've been about this ever snce i read that article. I don't see how they could do it either. The person who wrote that article was probably just bull$h!ting. It would be nice to have a manual clutch on my little 250, though.

Their is a guy on the Kawasaki forum that has a Lakota with a manual clutch. I would think Lakota-ex would be the same concept. I think his name is 98lakota. Search in the Kawasaki forum and you can find his web site and he has pictures of it.

i think the lakota is chain drive so the gears are up front unlike the 250. I would think for the 250 you would need to move the gears up front on somehow put the gears back in the gearbox which seems inpossible. But they do make kits for a lokota to change it.

It should be possible, 4 stroke tech makes a manual clutch kit for the Wolverine, an auto clutch, shaft drive quad,so it should not be a problem for the 250ex. On the Wolverine,it takes 5 lbs. off the counter shaft for quicker revving and faster acceleration. This does require some machining on the case for the linkage and manual clutch cable, should be the same procedure on the ex. It would make it feel faster, with less rotating mass on the engine,it will rev faster, and you can rev it more before engaging the clutch,so it would launch faster, and be a lot more fun on the trail.

It could probably be done with a lot of work. A 250EX has two clutches if you guys didn't know. First you'd have to fix the centrifugal clutch so it's always engaged then rig up something on the other clutch so it could be operated by a cable. Easier said than done I'm sure!
