OK to run 91/93 octane in a Recon?
#1
Just wondering because I also have a V700. The manual & the gas tank say to run 91 in the 700. When we go trail riding it would be nice to only have to carry 1 gas can with 91 instead of 2, 1 with 87 & another with 91. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

You might lose a little power in the Recon because of the slower burning 91/93 octane but it wont hurt anything. I would split the difference, run 89 in both and watch the V700 temperature for a while. If the temp doesn’t change more than a few degrees than its fine. My Quadracers say to run 89 octane. I tried 87 octane because I was fueling up the truck also one day and put 87 in the quad by accident. It ran the same temp but with more power, so now I run 87 intentionally.

different octanes dont burn any faster or slower...a higher octane just resists early detonation better. Just carry one tank with 91 or 92, whatever you use in the 700
Oh, and you wont lose any power from using a higher octane than necessary.

TomM-
So are you saying if I run 87 in my 700 I might get a little more power? & it will not hurt the Recon to run 91/93 in it?

these power differences arent worth arguing. the kawi's compression is more than likely high and needs a fuel that has a higher flash point. the only disadvantage ive seen to running too high of an octane is burnt o2 sensors (FI cars i dont know if your quad is FI, doubt it) and even that was with high octane race fuels.

the recon should not be hurt. ive been running the best grade pump gas in all the 4 strokes ive ridin (including a 20 year old 70 that is still running strong to this day without any type of rebuild) over the years with no problems. HTH
