Default 250x wont idle

Hey All, First timer here, I just bought an 87 250x, the guy i bought it from said it was running good and then he swamped it. then it wouldnt idle and now it just barely stays running, so he gave up and now its my problem, im thinking carb or electronics, i think i narrowed it down. lol. any suggestions on whats wrong would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Well...I dont think it is the electronics..considering theres no e-start...and there is only a light..and the light wont have to do anything with it runnung..So maybe take the carb off clean it out jets and everything with carb cleaner then spray out the jets with an air compresser...then if that doesnt work..Id rebuild the topend..no pistons, seal,o-rings, etc.

Ok i pulled the carb and cleaned it out. still wont stay running, with the choke on it will start , as soon as you turn the choke off it sounds like its running out of gas. can any of you carb finatics tell me the screw adjustments for all of the screws on the carb. the main jet has an adjusting nut on it, its in all the way, the screw on the side of the float bowl is turned in all the way, the screw on the bottom of the carb is out 1 full turn. and the screw with the big black *** on it doesnt seem to do anything, it makes no contact with anything in the cable area of the carb, am i in over my head or what? anyone that can give me adjustments on those screws i would appreciate it, my sons are driving me nuts. Thanks

The screw in the side of the carb is the float bowl drain,it is supposed to be all the way in.the small screw in the bottom is the air mixture(or pilot) screw. It should be about 2 1/2 turns out.The one with the plastic **** on it is the idle screw. You say that moving that one doesnt change anything, turning it in should raise the idle, turning it out will lower the idle.Try turning it all the way in and see if it helps..............

Yeah, you might have the idle screw turned down all the way and the bike wont idle, does it work fine when you try to ride it..if it does, then it is the idle..

Thanks for the suggestions so far, but as my luck would have it, notheing has helped so far. A few new findings that i have made is: !. the idle screw must have something missing on the inside of carb, because it doesnt work at all, and it looks as though the previous owner tried to rig up his own idle screw, i found he drilled a hole behind the curved throttle lever and tapped a screw into it as his idle adjusyment. also i removed the rubber air cleaner tube frome the carb and noticed a mist of gas coming out of the throat of the carb, i dont think thats normal. Anyone wanna guess why its doing that. Thanks again for the help, and if anyone has carb rebuild instructions on there computer , if you could email them to twisted289@yahoo.com that might help also thanks again
