The reason I am asking is because my brother-in-law keeps telling me that all the atc's will only run about 50mph, but i know they have to go a lot faster than that.

Back when they still made them, 3 wheelers went by ATC (all terrain cycle). They added a wheel and called that ATV (all terrain vehicle). IRS is indeed Independant Rear Suspension. IFS would be Independant Front Suspension, and FIS would be Fully Independant Suspension (which is stupid, because anything with IRS is going to be that way in the front as well.

You guys must have been around some slow Big Reds. There's a few farmers around here that still have the 250 Big Red and those things will out run any Honda 4x4. Except maybe a Rincon. I rode an '86 250 Big Red for quite some time before I got my 300 4x4 and I know that will will do at least 55mph. Some of the old 2 stroke ATC's like the Yamaha Tri-Z and the Honda ATC 250R would easily run over 60 mph.

the tri-z is totally different than the bigred..when i was 16 my dad traded his boat for a tri-z im not sure what it had done for mods but the damn thing was fast..i was being chased by a cop and he said he clocked me at 80 mph then i crashed it into the woods, like i said dont know what it had for mods...

I know the Tri-Z is totaly different than a Big Red so is the ATC 250r. It's like compareing a 250ex to a 250r. Both 250cc but one is 4 stroke and one is 2 stroke. But he did ask how fast an ATC went. And those 2 just fly. They didn't need much in the way of mods either. My cousin had the Tri-Z 250 and it was stock and it still had enough ***** to scare the crap outa ya. 55 mph on a hardpack dirt road (not gravel) and you could light up the rear tires and slide it sideways. It was way to fast for me, no good in the bush either. Thats why I rode the Big Red. Like I already said the Big Red was good for 55mph or a little more.
