I have used car oil in my motorcycles with oil bath clutches for 45yrs. No problems. Synthetic car oil will raise HELL on your clutch though. According to a little reasearch on the old p.c. the two best petroleum based oils were the oil for BMW and Golden Spectro. If you have a dry clutch and can use synthetic oil the best one is RED LINE. whitch is the one most of the drag racers use reguardless of what is addvertised on the sides of the cars. And the guy that worked at Citco is pretty mutch right. But remember Racers rebuild engines very frequently and aren't worried about sludge build up. Some synthetics don't use detergants in there oils.

kford,
Great article, I've used Honda oil in the past, but recently switched to Valvoline synthetic blend. After reading that article, I'll just use Castrol GTX from now on as it out performed even Honda's "good stuff". I've always suspected there was a little hogwash in motorcycle oil, but the more I read about it, the more I believe it's a huge waste of money. Especially since the Rubicon takes almost 6 quarts.

OMG.. synthetic causes clutch slip? Heavier springs? Gimme a break. Mobil 1 15w50 is what I've used in all MCs and ATVs for the past 15 years. Never had a problem.
People need to get over the "synthetic is too slippery" wive's tale and find out what makes synths better... (hint, it's not that they are "slipperier").
