Mine (98) had a loose baffle inside the muffler that rattled a bunch when the engine was running. According to a mechanic who looked at it, this is a common problem. It did not affect the performance, just a tough, tough quad. Mine had 26" Dirt Devil tires, which were a great add for a variety of trails with occasional mud and water.

my brother in laws 98 has been a lot of trouble lately. wheel bearings were replaced a couple months ago, i guess the big tires caused that. it was rebuilt last year, something is wrong with it again. its got some kind of rattling sound, it kind of sounds like valve chatter on a car. and the brakes have been long gone. i am sure they are great fourwheelers, but my brother in law is lazy and stupid and doesn't take care of anything, so that could be the reason too.

My Bro has a 02TRX450s with a BMRP exhaust and a K&N Filter and outwear, and a jet kit from Dyno Jet with a new needle and jets. He's using the needle in the 4th position and the 134 main jet.
Anyone else know what he can do to get more powerand speed out of his bike. Porting works and bores but he's not intersted in that right now.
450s past 3 machine problems - new head, brakes (all), broken silencer (1 inside guts rattled)

The engine is designed for low end torque not horse power. Think tractor. If you try to spin the engine too fast reliability will suffer.
Also, horsepower and power band are mutually exclusive. As you get more horsepower, powerband narrows. The engine will start to bog at lower RPMs, a bad thing.
I really enjoy the low end torque of the motor. I would never trade torque for HP. I short shift and let the torque power me around. Sooooooo easy to drive.
