With your idle turned up your carb is staying open a little further so more fuel is still flowing. That is not the good way to stop the popping though. Did you get to that little screw underneath yet? Did it help?

Alternate Answer: the fit of the aftermarket pipes may not be as good or the same as the oem pipes so if reusing the original donuts, the fit may not be perfect at the exhaust port, allowing air to be drawn into the pipe under decompression (most vacuum at the exhaust port) and causing backfiring. Not to say that the "idle air mix" explanations may not be correct.

If you have an air leak caused by a loose connection at the exhaust/ head pipe it will also backfire when you release the throttle............note I posted this before I read the comment about adjusting the idle and the popping stopping. The "donuts" are the compressable rings used to seal the fit between the exhaust ports and the headpipes.
I had the same problem on two different quads, but with a Lectron race carb which has no low idle air screw adjustment - just an idle screw and a tapered flat on the needle which works as the low rpm fuel control or low rpm jet....I adjusted this carb 20 times - including calling the manufacturer to see if I had the correct tapered needle ........before I found a bad fit at the head pipes. Both problems occurred right after I had changed the exhaust systems.
