Atkins I like the spirit of your post but Honda's been working on this for some time, not a mere reaction to the YFZ.
These are great times after the drought of new machines from pre 1990 all the way forward to the 400 EX. I remember getting all excited when the 300EX came out for pete's sake.

For all of you guys who's been into the scene since the 80's- you'll know what I'm talking about - sitting back as one happy consumer, with the best choices in well over a decade.

now i'm excited. honda is returning to ATV racing. nothing else matters. the TRX450R could be a foreman 450 with different plastic and as long as they race it, i'd be bouncing off the walls with anticipation. go honda.

Back then, a 250cc two stroke was the hi-po benchmark. Then, the Banshee and Quadzilla was introduced and everyone went nuts!!
I remember how exciting it was when the Warrior came out. Remember that? 350 engine, electric start (a biggie back then) AND reverse!!!
It's amazing how everyone talks down about these new machines. I tell you, most of you boasters and big talkers take these machines for granted.
Appreciate them for what they are. They've come a long way, baby!

i'm a fan of honda's past machines and i believe they are the best engineered vehicles on the planet, but a tweaked 400EX with a CRF450 motor in it....IS AN INSULT.Yamaha showed their cards first, the ball was in Honda's court to come out and build a quad version of the CRF450R, as close to a full-on factory bike as you can get. an aluminum or chromoly frame... an entirely new machine bred to be the new industry leader as the 250R was in it's day. Instead they fall way short of the hype and bring shame to the honda name.in the eighties, suzuki made the quadracer and Honda made the 250R and it was much better.in the nineties, Honda came out with the 400EX, then Bomb built the DS650. Yamaha one-up'd them both with the 660R Raptor.oh well, as long as honda buys enough ads in dirtwheels, they'll sell every 450R they can make...out of scrap parts lying around the factory.screw you, honda.

I'm curious what the timeline was for research, design, and production of the Yamaha vs. the Honda. If the Honda started the design phase first, but Yamaha was first to market, this could explain why the Honda matches the Yamaha pretty closely vs. blowing the specs away.
Personally, I like the new 450R, especially the deeper red color of the plastics. Honda did a good job on this one.

I'm interested to see the power delivery. The Honda has a 42 mm carb the Yamaha has a 39mm.The way thay have lowered the cc's in both are different.Yamaha has shortened the stroke,Honda shortened the stroke slightly and also has a slightly smaller bore. These two differances could make the two engines perform quite differently. Can't wait to line them up.
