Ok, I'm pretty new to riding but I noticed the trx450r has a lower compression ratio than the yfz. What exactly does this mean? Does more compression equal more power but less reliability?

It means less power than the 2-wheel version. More compression is more power at all RPMs. So the Honda get's significantly less power than the 2-wheel version and the Yamaha gets a little less. 2 Points of compression is probably 5-7 horsepower.

usually equates for more torque.

reliability does go down when morons start putting 87 octane in a engine with near 12:1 compression. See 'detonation' for more info on that. if u run the correct octane rating, you should be fine.

HA2 is right. Higher compression = higher torque. Horsepower is not directly related to compression. The yfz needs a minimum of 91 octane. I would think that the trx will ask for 89 but i dont put anything lower then 91 in any of my engines except a lawnmower.

well to be honest that is a bit of a bummer. I'm not saying the yfz will outperform the trx450r, we'll have to wait to see them compete before we know, but I was under the impression the Honda would be leaps and bounds better. I definantly won't buy one this year. I think the best thing to do will be to wait for the 05 models and see if yamaha puts a true 450 in the yfz. Then I will see which one performs better for desert riding, hill climbing ect...

I think there are finally two new quads(yfz450, and the thr450r) that will finally rid the pro-production class of the trail oriented z400., and Honda signing Tim Farr, if you havent already noticed, is a Godsent. This now puts all of the other manufacturers under pressure to sign factory racers and will give top racers the money they deserve. And if manufacturers start sponsering racers, then they will start advertising their investment on TV and in the media, taking our sport to the next level!

It will pressure Suzuki/Kawasaki to get cracking on their 450, they have not even released the motocross version yet. If anyone is behind it's Suzuki/Kawasaki, Honda only delayed the 450 b/c of the Yamaha....they found out the YFZ was remarkable and decided to improve the 450R, they made the right move if you ask me. I was considering buying a YFZ until I heard Honda was releasing the 450R, the 450R should compete well with the YFZ....it will most likely come down to the skill of the rider.

Do you know for a fact that Honda delayed the new TRX because of the new yfz. Personally, i dont think they did. Honda has always been known for being VERY reliable. Motocross and GNCC can be very hard on a quad, everything needs to be top notch or you will have problems when racing. I think Honda just took the time to make this machine extra reliable for the extra abuse they are going put thru. If i was head honcho at Honda i would not delay or speed up the process of making this new quad just because yamaha introduced the YFZ.
