rope start
#1
Last night the wife and I had planned to take a late night full moon ride. I loaded the ATV in the back of the truck about 9: pm. Just as I was getting off I turned the key back on to see how many miles were on the ATV. Got everything loaded and headed up the canyon. We got up to where we unload and got on the ATV and the green neutral light was on real dim, I forgot to turn the key off after checking the mileage. The engine did not turn over fast enough to start. My wife made the comment, well; I guess it had to not start one of these days. I pulled the little plastic cover off, grabbed the rope and first tug it fired right up. This is the first time in 4000 miles that rope has been pulled. Unloaded and up the canyon we went.
Went up the switchback in the top of the canyon basin to the old tailings through 4 inches of new snow left by a storm Monday night. This is a little canyon is close the famous Brighton Ski Resort in Utah and was being mined back in the 1860s. Got out our little propane infrared heater, blanket and hot chocolate and waited for the moon to come up over the horizon. 11:15 and there was the moon! What a great view of the moon lit canyon and all the new snow. Buttoned up our little camp and headed back down the canyon around 11:45. The last time we were here about 3 – 4 weeks ago, we watched 19 white mountain goats (big white Billy Goats) cross the bowl. This is a great ride although it is only about 10 miles round trip from the highway, not many people know about it. Pulled back in the driveway about 1:00 am this morning.
What a great ride. Glad our ATV has a back up starter.

I did something very similar on my grizzly 600, only the battery did not completely die and i was able to get it started with the starter, it sounds like you had a very nice time...I bet the view was beautiful!

Stories like that just make you want to get an atv. (I'm glad I already have one) Someone should take Rachel Weinietraub for a midnight ride. Maybe she'd look at atv's in a whole new light. (She's the assistant general counsel for the Consumer Federation of America.)

Thanks, it was a great ride.
The trail we took is the only trail left for ATV’s all along the Wasatch Front (the mountain range behind Salt Lake you see in all the Olympic pictures). I used to take my 4x4 truck up this same canyon 21 years ago, and all through these mountains. Not any more. All the trails and roads have been closed to motorized vehicles except this one, motorcycles and ATV’s only. ½ the hikers give us dirty looks; them I would just assume run over them.
My wife and I were very impressed this trip up. ZERO garbage along the trail, not even a single can. There is usually very little any way, but none this time.
We hang a plastic grocery bag off the back of our Tamarack trunk and fill it ever time we ride, sometimes two bags. Everyone needs to clean up where they ride and stay on the trails!! It will only help preserve our riding privileges.
Tread Lightly and carry out what you carry in, + a little extra.
Sorry, don’t mean to preach, just love to ride.
