Hello, I'm thinking of doing this swap, and I figure y'all can help answer some questions for me. First off, are the engine mounts in the same locations on 400 an XR650L engines? What I want to do is bolt a 650L into a TRX400EX frame. Is it just a simple bolt in, or will I have to fab the mounts? Also, would the CDI box for the 400 work on the 650L to allow it to rev higher? What about the connectors on the wiring? Will the headpipe for the 400 fit into the exhaust ports of the 650L? I've seen a 650L in a 400EX before, but I was unable to get any answers from the owner on the swap. Also, can you recommened any sites that have good performance equipment for 650Ls like Hinson baskets and such? I know I've asked a lot of questions, but I really want to do this swap, so I hope to get some answers from here.

no, nothing will fit and yes you will have to fab everything.

I've got this motor in a Warrior frame, thinking of doing one in a 400ex as well, but looks to be just as much work. Project time-frame / 12-18 months

 

OK, what kind of performance are you getting from this engine? What exhaust header are you using? I'm trying to make a decision between this engine and that of a Kawasaki KLX650R. The Kawie will require a ton of work though, so I'm prepared for that. Do you have any pics?

 

I'm using a Yoshi. header but soon to be custom built dual exhaust, as far as performance goes, it's the same as any other engine, if you get inside with some parts- it will respond. I have alot of time in my conversion with countless nights of R&D, it's all in what you want, took me 2 years to work all the bugs out, it's not just slap-it-in and go ride type of deal, good luck.

 

If you end up not doing the XR650L conversion, I'll buy your motor for spare parts for mine.
