Stator on 400ex.
#5
Ok if anyone is listening I have a 04 400ex an it won't hold a charge on the battery I've tried a lot of new electrical parts so now I'm gonna try to install my first stator an I have a few questions before I dig in.. From what I've heard the flywheel has to be removed before I can get to the stator.. Now how hard is it to remove the flywheel an when reinstalling it is there anything I need to know? If you can think of anything that would keep me from messing anything up it would be appreciated. Im pretty mechanically inclined but I've never installed a stator before.. Thanks any help would be great

Flywheel doesnt have to be removed,,Stator is mounted in the left engine case cover..Just drain oil, remove bolts in left cover, remove cover, stator is mounted just inside of the cover,,,Also just be careful with the starter gear and shim washer, No special tools..just mertic tools, 10mm socket,8mm socket ,gasket scaper.Good luck..

Ok thanks that's a big help an speaking of the starter gear.. I can hook a jumper box to my 400ex an sometimes sounds like the gear isn't engaging sounds like its free spinning then I can tap the start button an it will finally engage and start.. Is that the little solenoid beside the battery causing that problem or something else thanks for the help

Sounds like the starter clutch bearing and gear has some wear on them,,This atv dont have an bendix like an auto...Its has an one bearing that free wheels when engine is running and engine stops there an one way that kickout to grab the gear so when the starter is enaged the start shaft touches the gear an turn engine over by the gear being locked into the one way bearing, SO when this bearing gets worn its starts to slip which causes the starter to sound like its slipping...So if you have to replace this bearing an gear the flywheel would have to come off..the oneway bearing race is bolted to the backside of flywheel so you will have to have an puller designed to remove this type flywheel.. flywheel has female thread inside the center of flywheel...Hope this helps...

Im not sure what you mean by tapping starter button?.....If solenoid engages when you tapp the button then tis sounds like you may starter switch problem...So I would narrow this problem down to which part is bad.But IMO the two problem isnt related..solenoid just an electrical contact to both cable on solenoid to complete curcuit to starter..And starter clutch mention in above post is an mechanical part..You will have to narrow down to switch or solenoid.. or connections from switch to solenoid..Good Luck
