How to judge inclines and declines before attempting
#12
Thanks all for your comments. That really helps. This weekend, I will be going out with the Two Rivers ATV Club (Davenport, Iowa) to do some ditch riding. I know that some of those ditches will have steep inclines and declines. The legislature passed a law last Spring that allows ditch riding year round. Municipalities and counties can slap on restrictions, though.
When I was at the riding park this last weekend, I was all alone. I was amazed at how my Rincon performed when I was trying to reverse a couple of jams I worked myself into. I instinctively threw my leg out a couple of times against the dirt when the machine was tipping severely to the side because of the ruts. There was nothing else I could do. But I handled the steering and throttling appropriately and got myself moving forward with no problems. That was a little scary, being inexperienced.
I thoroughly understandand and agree with throttling back and coasting over the peak of the incline. The traversing technique of putting our weight on the leg that is on the side of the decline is good body mechanics. So, right here are two tools to use. Good speed, always.
Now a near 90 degree incline..... that I would like to see, watching someone else attempt it.
