I have a honda recon i bought in late 99' (i think it's a 2000 model, but not sure) and after looking at numerous posts about the 400ex's throttle adjustments that were neccassary I thought in the middle of the night "can't hurt to check cable on the Recon." So I went out to the garage, made my way through moped, dirtbike, other assorted crap and finally get to my Recon. I pull back the black boot off of the throttle cable to see that the son-of-bit...gun (gotta watch my language in here)was adjusted all the way in. Just to make sure i push the thumb-throttle all the way in and i never hear a click from the carb. It was too late for me to do any work so I came in, Got on the computer, came here made a post. Looks like I got something to do tomarrow. I hope it makes a big difference after i adjust it because I've always had a need for speed.

This adjustment is simply removing slack from the throttle cable. Every new ATV (reguardless of brand) that I've seen has the same problem. I'm so used to it that 5 minutes after getting my 400EX I was adjusting the throttle cable. It wasn't until about a month later that I started reading about all of this.

Thanks, tonight I am going to check my Recon & Rancher.

How do you know how far to adjust the cable?

Thanks for the info...........I adjusted the Recon & Rancher. WOW what a difference on response. The RAncher now bucks like it wants to do a wheelie!!!!!!!

I don't think top end was affected, but getting there will be quicker.

to check if you adjusted it to far turn the handlebars lock to lock and make sure the idle stays the same if it was to tight the it would pull on the cable when the handlebars were turned if so slowly loosen it back up untill it dosnt do that

Just curious--providing the throttle cable was fully opening the carb by the end of thumb lever travel, where does all this new power come from by simply adjusting the cable? Or are all these quads coming from the factory with the carb opening purposely limited at the handlebar?
As for the feel, could it be because the same power comes on right now instead of after, say, a 1/2" of thumb movement?
Like I said, just curious--I'm fairly new to atvs and maybe there's something different in their carb/cable set-up. I also have a Rancher & Recon so I'll take a look later.

The Rancher when I hit the throttle wide open there would be a slight hesitation & the it would rev.

Now when I hit the throttle, no hesitation it jumps, like it wants to pull the front end off the ground.

The cable was adjusted out about 1/4" of an inch. The factory had the cable adjustment all the way in.

Thanks snowshark, I'll give it a try. Haven't noticed a hesitation but then I've been taking it kind of easy till they had a few miles on them.
