Default Help! replacing starter on old 350 trx

Finally something on my old 1986 350TRX has died. I need to remove the starter, does anyone know if it can be done without removing the left side of the engine. It looks like it should come off with only removing the starter gear cover but it dosent look like there is enough room to back it out of the slot?

There are two starters for that quad. If you have the short shaft it will come out the long shaft most of the time will not.

I've got an '88 and was able to remove mine by unscrewing the starter gear side cover, removing the gear and unbolting the 2 mounting bolts to the engine......took me less than 10 minutes.
