Dont get me wrong the 400ex is an awesome quad, But for lots of power right out of the box the rappy takes it with its higher top speed and more powerful engine... I would go with the rappy and you have reverse too.

I understand you problem with POWER but trust me you would rather have a modded 400EX than a Raptor when its all said and done unless you are looking for straight line acceleration only.

Now if you were thinking more on the lines of the new YFZ450 or CRF450R then thats much different because there both better handling and performing machines (stock and modded). But now you have to decide what the money difference would be between modding the current quad v/s what you would lose in trading or? it for the new one.

I for one am not buying into the whole race ready out of the box crap on either of these and figure I would need another 4-6K for modding either beyond the orig purchase price. That may not sound like much to the guys I know with 10-15k into their quads but its still a lot of cash after adding the 7k price to get the quad.

So add up all the numbers (it would be slightly less to get your 400 up to date since you have some mods already) and make your decision.

Hey listen too 440ex026 he knows his stuff. if I were you I would stick with the 400ex I also have a 03 400ex and there great . Put some bolt ons in the 400ex ride the Hell out of it and when the motor gets tired send it too your favorite machine shop and bore stroke and run with the big dogs suspension should be a must and a cam but the cam doesn't have to be a must until you do the machine work but any ways just soup it a little now build the suspension and worry about go fast after you have figured the machine out and then you will know what size you will want to go with

I think you would be better off modifying the 400 than getting a raptor. You can have a very good 416 kit for $450. My 416 gives raptors all that than they can handle.

The potential to go faster will be with a larger displacement motor. The most you will squeeze out of a 400EX reliably is in the 50 hp range. Raptors and DS's can be taken to 70-80 hp and still be reliable. Weight to hp ratio will make up for some of the higher hp, heavier machines. There are some but not many EX's that will hang with the big boys.

Like pubjumper, Moding out a 400ex you will lose a lot of your reliability... I build car engines mostly if you start off with a small block chevy(350) you can make that thing rip and keep up with the big boys... But you lose reliability and their is a limit to just how far you can take that small block, With a big block(454) you start out big your ahead of them in the start you can only go bigger from their!!!

Raptor, Starts out big(and you can only go bigger) Very reliable when modded out....

400ex, Starts out small(you can go bigger but only so big their is a limit.., lose reliability, and your never going to come close to a rappy with the same mods....

Anyone that knows anything about engines will agree with this......

If you have the money to do all the things you listed, and feel the need to do them, I suggest looking at the YFZ450 and TRX450R. If you do all that you listed you will still just barely keep up with stock 450s.
