used 400ex??? 420ex could use your help

New is nice and you would know all its history etc but its only new once and you pay a lot for the honor.
Used can also be nice and though there are some deals out there you could allways end up with someone elses headache, so learn what your doing or looking for before buying used.
Its most allways less expensive in the long run to buy something that is modded to your liking than to buy one and then mod it, plus you dont have to wait etc. but again you need to know what to look for.
Personally I am not overly excited to buy something new that I intend to ride hard and will need as much maint as any used one and wouldnt be new for long plus I would only be modding it and throwing out or selling cheap many of the parts. For my use a used model with some basic mods or more at the right price is the best value, and it could be for you also if your needs are similar.
There is one very large plus to buying a used EX right now (and remember if its under 3 yrs old you should have little trouble putting down the 2k and borrowing the rest) and that is the prices have fallen insanely since all the new 450's are being released etc. and you can get well modded examples for less than a new one all day long.
I have seen very clean never raced 00-01 models around 3k with most mods and some even with lower end works suspension. Spend a little more and you are likely to get a lot more in return like a big bore and possibly full aftermarket suspension. The little bit can be 1-3k but it seems allmost cheap to get a fully modded 2 or 3 yr old machine with most all the mods done allready for 4-5K but then you need to know how to tell the good ones from the abused or neglected ones etc.
Think on waiting for the 450R to start being delivered etc as I can only see them dropping more, and this is the reason I will be holding onto mine for a while longer.
