Small lesson: "It's easier to ask for forgivness, than ask for permission"

Absolutely NOT! Separate checking accounts is the best way to avoid money fights. She has her money, I have my money, and we have a joint checking account that we use to pay bills. It took me 2 ex-wives to learn, you young guys should listen to the voice of experience.

Luckily no. However, if the purchase is significant (ranging from $500 on up) I will usually try to discuss the purchase with her. We talk about it and she's like "ok" or "your asking me why?" Fortunately, my wife is able to stay home with our children and is very understanding of my spending habits. She doesn't care as long as there is money in the checkbook to pay the bills.

I've had many friends over the years who would pay hell if they were spending $5 or $10 for food without permission. One guy was like "don't tell my wife we went to lunch and that I had a beer, she'll kill me". Once the ring was on their fingers or they popped out a kid, they were some controlling Biooootches.

I don't know how guys put up with that crap. It's ok for a man to act like a man and for a woman to act like a woman. If they choose to switch roles, so be it. Somehow in the last 30yrs or so, that logic has been terribly screwed up. With both persons trying to be the man of the house, it will never work.

I always check with my wife before I buy something There have been a few occasions where said buy may have spent some time at a friends. Sometimes it is neccesary to properly butter up your wife before it comes up. It is sometimes neccesary & a good idea to get you wife something out of the blue. Just to show how thoughtful & loving you are. Give it a day or two to sit & casually bring up the item on your agenda. Hey hon I'm just kicking myself. I saw this 400ex today a guy is selling. He's hard up for cash & wants it to go to someone he knows. I really don't need it but could come in handy for hauling the little trailer for your gardening materials in . That sounds like a good idea she says with a smile! The key here is setting the mood so you can get what you want. OF course if my wife saw this I would be royally screwed! So let's keep this between us guys.
So to answer your question yes you need permission. I think the grey area can be when you get the permission

Warning: People change. You can roll the dice and get the right one, and hope she doesn't change, or not. 'til then, I enjoy shopping for that right one. .... I really hope I dont find her! This life is just way too much fun! As far as permission or forgiveness, I don't need it from anyone - The last I checked I was a free man.

WOW,
Sounds like most of the guys married their mother. Need permission? I've been with the same woman 20 yrs. I've never asked permission, I've told her of my plans and she has benifited(sp) from the purchase a time or two. She rides. She has never nagged, held anything over my head, or went on a spending binge to "get back at me".
She spends her money the way she wants as well. We don't have to worry about each other over extending. She'd be laughing her $ss off reading some of the posts.
I have a buddy with a wife like some who have posted. We haven't ridden since he got married 21 yr's ago.
With her, I don't think it's money, it's a control issue. They both work and make double what I do. She has to know where he is, who he's with, etc. Everything need to revolve around her is some small way.
It might not be a money thing after all guy's. Look into control issue.
Making a large toy purchase is way different than $issing money away on gambling, alcohol, stock market or drugs.
From what I see and hear I consider myself lucky. D: D:
