Need Help. Cannot get my 00 Rancher ES 4X4 out of 2nd gear. The ES is still functioning but won't shift even when rocking. Also, I can't even get it to shift manually. When I do manually push the gear shaft forward it will disengage the transmission but went let up it remains in 2nd gear.

 

does the display blink? if so that is a code pointing you to the problem. if it is blinking count the sequence of blinks. that is the code diagnosing the problem. call your dealer or get a repair manual. that will point you at the repair process. dg

 

The display is a steady 2. No blinking. I just ordered a manual.

 

it's probably an angle sensor or a shift sensor. let me know. god luck. dg

 

i get this on my 250ex, lean forward so that wheels turn no further then try, worked for me

Have someone rock it back and forth, while you shift with the handle. The constant mesh tranny needs movement to work.
Then when youre in nuetral, and turnon the key, what is displayed? Is it --?

 

That it doesn't shift manually would indicate you don't have any problem with the electronic shifting part of your wheeler. Sounds like a tran linkeage problem. I think there's a product improvement campaign on your machine having to do with the linkeage, the shift plate specifically. I believe it's a current bulletin yet, and Honda (I think) will cover that specific problem yet even though your wheeler is out of warranty. If it is a different problem, you'll probably have to pay out of your pocket.
