416ex 10.8:1 w/ hot cam stage 1 ??????
I'm getting a JE 10.8:1 piston, going to have head work done too, I like to do trail riding and race, i would rather have the low end then top end, and heard the stage 1 is better for low but it says that its is for "stock" motors and that stage 2 is for bigger and more comp. motors can i get a stage one?

if your looking for the most low end grunt, i would go stage 1. you will gain pretty much in the midrange to top end also. i like my stage two, but i would't get it for low end power or tight trail riding, even though it does fine. the stage 1 of my friends works better for tight trials.

I went thru this on my 440 which was a real learning experience.
Now understand that with a larger bore and free flowing intake and exhaust is where the differences will be more obvious and favor the stage2. What happens is that if you put the stage2 into a stk bore, comp engine it will not be 100% and even with an intake and exhaust that would compliment the mid to top etc it will hurt the bottom end due to the design of the cams profile.
With the stock bore and compression you would see a better overall gain with the stage1 due to the smaller profile (its set up a little bigger than the xr cam) which will not hurt the bottom end as much and the engine isnt needing the additional duration of the stage2 for the mid-top anyhow so you wouldnt get any real gains with the stage2.
Now if you put it all together at once with the larger bore, higher comp, exhaust, intake and some porting work (just basic nothing fancy) and run the stage1 you will have a decent bottom end grunt but will be starving the engine from mid-top. This was my problem, and though you want bottom end for the tree to tree and uphill runs in XC etc you will still be hitting the meat of the mid-top rpm range and dont want the power to fall off in this range either. So this is where the stage2 will help you a lot and if you have a lot of mods internal you may even want to look into something with a larger lift than the stage2 as this will help the engine breathe better at lower rpms which = more low end grunt.
I hope that helped make this easier to understand but expect I just created a bunch of new questions...

yes, you will have slightly less top end power with the stage 1 but he said low end power was more important.
i forgot to mention i am running an 11:1 compression 406 (86mm) piston and i still wouldn't get the stage 2 for tight trails. my friends 406 with stage 1 definately does better in the tight areas. however, with a higher compression or 440, it may be a different story. i probally only have 1 or 2 mph over my friend on top speed. i also am running a top end pipe (x-6) with a higher compression piston. so on the 406's, the top end isn't much difference, but yes i can beat him. for trail riding i just need to use the clutch much more than my friend with a 10.5:1 piston with stage 1 cam.
overall, the choice is yours. good luck
