This seems really a little silly to me. Lets say that your battery dies, so you get to use that really cool kick starter you got. It may start, but you wont have enough juice from the battery to keep enough spark to go anywhere. Just replace the factory battery once every two years and you'll be good. I had a kick starter on my KTM LC4 640 and never used it once in 3 years.

yeah um u dont need the battery to go newhere, all it is for is the e-start and the lights so if u used a kickstart it would run fine and if u didnt want lights u could probly take the battery out if u wanted to

Well, then there is no short in the battery. When you say its hard to start, do you mean the battery charge is low, or that it continually cranks but will not turn over?

My understanding is the 400ex is a battery ignition so I gotta agree with Ironrod. You could probably run it with a weak battery, but not a dead, shorted or no battery.

A 400ex has a magneto setup, just like on a modern push mower, you dont need a battery to start that, do you?
