build new R or get 450r?
keep the R, a 450 is not going to be as great as the 250. i own a 250R and i would never even think about getting a 450, just because i never rode anything as quick or have as good as handling as a R. and another reason to keep the R is because you can get any part out there that you might want for the 250R, it's going to take some years to get where the R is. and if speed is a reason you want a 450, you can get a big bore kit for the 250 that will beat the hell out of a 450. go check out that 510 kit, even though a 310 like mine would be more than enough.

My advice would be to ride a couple of 450Rs and see what you think... Obviously you know what the 250R feels like and the maintenance associated with it. I know very little of the 250Rs myself, but did have an interesting experience last weekend at the dunes at Lil Sahara, Waynoka, OK. This guy I met, was jumping a 50ft dune on his 250R, he was pulling 4-5 ft of air coming off the dune. I jumped the dune as well and was getting the same air. It was to windy to really air out the quad and I am learning to jump better. The high wind affecting your quad was a new one to me, but I found out the scary way that it has effect. Anyways, this guy told me he was hitting the dune in 3rd or 4th gear and had to be very committed to the jump. Whereas I could hit the same jump in first or barely in second and pull the same air and the jump seemed a lot more controlled to me than when I had my 400ex.
This could have just been this rider, like I said before- I don't know about the 250R. With that said, building up the 250r will be cheaper, but there may be some advantages with having a four stroke with a different type of powerband and torque curve.
Either way you go, you'll have a sweet machine...

If it was up to me....I'd build the 250R. Everybody has their own opinion. If I'm going to be kick starting a high maintenance atv, why kick over a 4 stroke? If you are going to squeeze a lot of power out of the 450R, it becomes high maintenance. If people don't agree with this.....Go to a moto cross race and talk to some of the guys riding the CRF450's. To keep optimum power and starting ability, you will be replacing the piston, valves, valve guides fairly often. Just for the record....I love Honda's....The Yamaha 450 is no better than the Honda. I'm kind of dissapointed in the way the new quads are coming out. If I'm going to be riding a 4 stroke, I want reverse, electric start, decent power, and LOW maintenance! If I want to kick start something, I'll be riding the 250R.
I'm not trying to p*ss anybody off.....This is just my opinion.
