Let's put it this way, Speedy2; if you show up at Tasker's Gap ORV Area (trail map and driving directions at www.nvtr.org), and behave yourself (e.g., stay on the trails, stay out of the mudhole, don't climb the hills, don't run the power lines), and wear a helmet: I don't think you'll be "carded."
Park and unload at the ATV parking lot on Route 675 about 3 miles SE of Edinburg (Edinburg Gap Summit); then you have the Tasker's Gap area at your feet, or cross the road for the 7-mile trail to Little Fort Recreation area (Peters Mill Run Road/Powell Mountain Trail).
Have fun!

Code54, we're talking about a network of 30 miles or so of trails; the only truly "difficult" parts I think are along Edinburg Run (scale: 4 of 10), and Tasker's run (scale: 11 of 10). Both these passages are optional.
Otherwise, you have lots of rocky and some steep trails, but none too difficult. If you'll look at the Trail Map at www.nvtr.org, you'll see "Tasker's Gap Road." This section permits some pretty high-speed runs.
Across Route 675 from the ATV parking lot, Peters Mill Run Road/Powell Mountain Trail provides 7 miles of relatively straight running, but with some steep and rocky sections.
At reasonable speeds, a beginning dirt biker should do o.k.; the novice should certainly learn how to use body weight (to control and to stabilize the bike) quickly. Timed dirt bike/dual sport rides are held here every year. Enjoy the trails, courtesy Northern Virginia Trail Riders.
BTW, no serious mud--recommend you stay on the trails, out of the mud hole, don't climb the hills or run the power lines, because the rangers are cracking down. ATVers aren't the major culprits; 4X4 trucks and jeeps are; however, who's likely to get caught and blamed?
