04 Rancher electrical problem
#1
I picked up my 350 rancher monday. Yesterday I was riding around on some logging roads having fun and just getting use to everything, I had 15 miles on it. I stopped for a few minutes and shut the atv off. When I went to restart it and pushed the start button it clicked and the display went dead. We checked fuses and checked all the connections I could find. I finally started it with the recoil start, the electric shift wouldnt work and the display was going on and off. I had the use the manual shift to get it gear and limp home.
I hit one little bump on the way back and the display came back on and I was able to shift to second gear and then the display started flashing again and no more es shifting. We got home and put it on a trickle charge for a few hours but the display still flashed and I still had to use the rope start but the es worked long enough to get me to the truck to load it for thr trip to the dealer.
Any Ideas as to what happened???

I just checked the voltage and the battery was 12.7 when I turned the key on the voltage went to 10 and the starter wouldnt make a sound. The neutral lite came on slowly but the rest of the display wouldnt do anything. The book said that the es would still shift if the battery was dead but it didnt???

When they say itll shift with a dead battery... I think they mean with the motor running. Try to charge the battery, with a trickle charger, and then take it to Auto zone or Napa, and they can do a load test. Actuallly, you're still probably under warentee...bring it to the dealer, and theyll replace it.

Hondabuster, It was running and the es would not shift.
I have been charging the battery for about 6 hrs with a 2 amp charger. The gauge display will come on but as soon as I hit the starter button or turn on the lights everything goes out. I have again checked all fuses all terminals and come up with nothing.

My thoughts are the battery is bad. As soon as a load is put on it, the voltage drops too far. call the dealer and see if its covered under the warentee.

I think you are on the right track. The battery is acting like a big resistor. It is drawing the voltage down and if there are any relays involved they cannot keep their contacts connected. Probably a safety circuit built in.

Hondabuster and Rancherat, You guys were right. I got the Rancher back from the dealer today and they said they replaced the battery. They said it was shorting internally in the battery and would only hold a surface charge. He also said that the electric shift will not work when the battery is dead with the engine running.
Thank you both.
